The Expository Paragraph

"Una Tempestad"
A. Characters
1. Prospero was the ruler of a deserted island where there were few people. He ruled with oppression by being a bully to Caliban and taking away his and Ariel's freedom. He believed in magic.
2. Caliban was the slave of Prospero. He was mistreated every day by the oppression of his king. Caliban believed in the Gods of water, earth, wind, sky and nature.
3. Shadows were shown in the back part of the play. They showed the freedom that the characters wished to have.
B. Answers
1. The speeches that Caliban did during the play affected my perception of his character. In the beginning I just thought that he was a slave like any other that would submit quietly to the orders of his owner. Then I could see that he was forced to be the way he was and he was suffering so much that he had to take a stand little by little to believe again in freedom.
2. Miranda in the beginning of the play was very innocent. I think that as the play went on she became more aware of what the reality of her father was and how evil he really was. Also she falls in love and this changes many things in her emotional life.
3. Trinculo an Stephano believed that the island hat potential to make them very wealthy and that they could actually reign and exploit it.
4. The lights, the shadows, the sound effects and the props that the Dr, Isel Rodríguez used on stage made the play feel very realistic.
5. My opinion of the play is that it was very funny but at the same time demonstrated the essence of the message the author wished to portray, it was very nice to watch.
6. One theme of the play would be the oppression against the black and it was represented by Caliban who was treated like an animal just because he was black.

The Descriptive Paragraph

Red Riding Hood
Who is the wolf? I thought as I walked into the woods. Grandma always warned me,
she used to tell me every day “Red, wear your cape before you leave the house! There’s a
wolf in the loose, I don’t want you to get hurt.”
One day I woke up, and something hit my window. A rock I guess, I was frightened
“What could it be?” Some guy popped out from the woods. His name was John, a guy who
I fell in love with. He used to climb to my window on the nights, and we used to talk until
the sunrise.
One day I woke up as usual, but there was something strange… Footprints, traces of
the wolf. They were coming out from my window. Was John the wolf? I started searching
for him, he was working in the woods. I told him we needed to talk. We went somewhere
with more privacy, and I asked him. He wasn’t sure, he didn’t think so. He was confused,
so he decided that in the next full moon I was going to tie him up in a tree. And that’s how
it was, I tied him up in a tree that was very far away from the village. But something was
strange. On the full moon he didn’t change. I changed. I am the wolf, I unconsciously ate
my boyfriend. I was scared when I woke up. I panicked, I was wrong. I went through the
woods, the deeper the better. I started to run far away from everything, crying my heart out.
Noticing I was the beast everyone was scared of, even my grandmother, even me. But I
suddenly fell, something hit me, an arrow. My grandma knew everything, she knew how to
control me. She knew my weakness, silver arrows and my cape. My red cape, the one I
used to hate it was the one who transformed me back into a human shape. I passed out…
I remembered in my dream when I was eating the love of my life, his blood running
in my mouth. I suddenly woke up in my house. Sad and desperate, with many questions and
doubts.  I asked my grandma and she told me about the cape, and my mother… the
previous wolf.

Grammar Activity

Chinese Folktale
When the night is clear you can see shadows on the moon. According
to an old Chinese folktale, they are the shadows of the cinnamon tree
in the moon. This tree came to be because of the laziness of an
immortal, Wu Kang.
Wu Kang was in charge of guarding the dragon. However, he was
lazy. He often allowed the dragon to run away after drinking wine. One
day, he went to Mount K’un Lun. While he was there he met some of
his friends. They began to drink, compose poems, and throw dice. He
continued to drink, even after night came. He drank some more until
he became completely tipsy. When he saw some fellows playing chess,
he asked to join them. They advised him to go home because they
knew he was being negligent, but Wu Kang offered to wager the
dragon’s pearl. After playing a few moves of the game, Wu Kang lost
the pearl. As soon as he wagered and lost the dragon pearl, he wagered
and lost the mighty dragon.  When the Immortals learned of the loss
they were furious. They immediately sowed a pearl in the ground and
a tall cinnamon tree grew from it. When the tree reached a great
height they gave Wu Kang an axe and told him to cut off the branches.
As soon as he had cut off all the branches bigger ones sprouted and
grew. Wu Kang had to cut them off too. Wu Kang is still there to this
day cutting off branches. Now whenever you see shadows on the
moon, you will know that they are branches of cinnamon tree falling
down.

The Narrative Paragraph

The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl by Elizabeth Wong

Comprehension

  1. Elizabeth Wong and her brother instead of going with their friends, they went to Chinese school.
  2. Their attitude about going to Chinese school was negative and disapproving since they scream and kicked to their mother they didn't want to go.
  3. Their mother wanted them to go to Chinese school since it was the language of their heritage and where forced to learn it.
  4. Wong compares the Chinese with the public school and determines that in Chinese school she learns how to read, write and speak the language while in public school she learns mathematics, science and literature, which she considers more important since she believes than learning the language.
  5. According to Wong, her grandmother was a fragile seventies woman who could outshout the best of the street vendor with a raunchy humor, and her rhythm less and pattern less Chinese. Her attitude towards her grandmother was not a good one since the language didn't sympathized her because it was loud, quick and unbeautiful.
  6. Wong's brother had a more excited and more appealing attitude towards speaking English than she did. It was so, that he would criticize his own mother because of pidgin speech , lack of understanding and pronunciation of the English language. I would account this behavior justifiable since their mother forced them to know a language they didn't want to learn and was strict with them in making them learn it.
  7. In paragraph 14 she quotes" At last, I was one of you, I wasn't one of them". She refers to you as the American people and them as the Chinese people.
Discussion

  1. Wong says she's multicultural because of the way she and her brother are raised by a Chinese mother living in America and attending a public school. Wong also says her mother obligates them to go to a Chinese school to learn the language and somehow I do think this example is surprising because the way their mother wants them to learn the language and writing even though they doesn't want to.
  2. "Sadly I still am" is what she says at the last sentence where she refers and let us know that her attitude changed completely towards the Chinese school changed when she became an adult. I think the reason of her change comes with the maturity that now she knows the importance and the meaning of being multicultural a thing that her teenager ignorance didn't let her know.
  3.  I don't think it's right to obligate and force them to attend the Chinese school as she mentioned in the story because somehow everything their mother forced them to go a little bit of hate towards the culture was being made in their minds, a thought that if she would have gave them to choice to go maybe a little interest would have made them go.
  4. I think it's possible to maintain a good multicultural life only if you really want to, the thing that I don't think it's possible is the fact that someone could eliminate some of their heritages totally just for becoming part of another culture. A person can lose and gain everything for becoming "all American", losing the opportunity to know and experience a culture just for knowing other when you can experience both and becoming a multicultural person never hurt anybody.

The Writing Process

My best friend has been an inspiration in my life. He has is a very intelligent mas. Since we've been friends he has always inspired me to be my best self, to work hard on what I want, to never lose hope in myself and to follow my dreams. He left Puerto Rico to study and play basketball. I find it very inspiring that he sacrificed so many things to go after what he wants. My best friend is my inspiration for giving the extra mile and no matter what happens never giving up and always looking at the positive side of every situation.
